Moving the Harvest
Australia’s grain transport network is a complex interplay of on-farm trucks, short-haul road transport, long-haul rail, and bulk shipping — all working in seasonal concert to move one of the world’s largest grain crops to domestic and export markets.

The logistics challenge is enormous. In a bumper year, Australia may produce over 50 million tonnes of grain across a growing region stretching from northern Queensland to southern Western Australia — a continent-spanning task that tests every link in the supply chain.
Road Transport
Road transport is the dominant mode for grain movement from farm to silo, typically covering distances of 30–1000 km. B-double and road train combinations of up to 68 metres are common in key growing regions, capable of carrying 70+ tonnes per load.
Rail Transport
Rail is the primary mode for long-haul grain movement to port in WA and SA. Dedicated grain trains operated by companies including CBH Group (WA) move hundreds of thousands of tonnes per week during peak harvest. The viability of branch lines in eastern states has become a major policy issue.
Port & Shipping
Australia’s export grain flows through dedicated bulk grain terminals at major ports. Key export ports include Fremantle/Kwinana (WA), Port Adelaide (SA), Portland & Geelong (VIC), Port Kembla (NSW) and Brisbane (QLD).
🚚 Road Train Country
In outback Queensland and WA, multi-trailer road trains are the only practical grain transport option across vast distances. These vehicles can haul up to 100 tonnes on a single trip across the inland highway network.
⚓ Kwinana Bulk Terminal
The CBH Group’s Kwinana Bulk Terminal south of Fremantle is Australia’s largest grain export terminal, handling up to 200,000 tonnes per week at peak harvest and loading Panamax and Capesize vessels.
